Grab a pole for a fishing event to raise awareness for mental health in the Treasure Valley

Idaho Statesman - 4/19/2022

Apr. 19—How about spending a day outdoors fishing? Yes, please! This weekend, you can not only cast to your heart's content, while getting some fresh air and much-needed vitamin D, but you'll also be supporting mental health awareness in the Treasure Valley. Sounds like a reel good time, right? (Sorry.)

Boise mental health agency, A Body & Mind Health Services (ABM), is presenting its annual "Hooked on Mental Health" all-ages fishing event on Saturday, April 23, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Rotary Pond, 21235 W. Chicago St., Caldwell.

Idaho Fish and Game will provide free fishing permits to participants.

ABM staff will be on site providing mental health resources, as well as certificates to local outdoor shops. Idaho Angler will donate a free fly fishing lesson, and the kid who catches the biggest fish will receive a certificate.

The event is not only designed to raise awareness for mental health in the Treasure Valley, but to show how being outdoors can improve your mental well-being.

"Mental health is so important. We have to work together as a community to address it and provide more local resources," Patrick Fithen, ABM co-founder and chief executive officer, said in a news release. "There tends to be a stigma when talking about mental health. When we provide events and opportunities for the community to get together and discuss the topic, it becomes easier to share and talk about. We hope this will become an annual celebration and opportunity for the community to gather mental health resources, create healthy relationships, and fall in love with fishing while enjoying what Idaho has to offer."
